On Saturday, March 14, 2026, the Somali Federation Organization in the Netherlands (SFON) and the Kardo AID Foundation organized a community iftar in Zwolle, bringing together members of the Somali community, local leaders, and guests. The event attracted a large turnout and was marked by a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The gathering was officially opened by the Chairman of SFON, Abdikador Ali Nuune, who welcomed the guests and thanked the volunteers, board members, and families who prepared meals for the community.
“We are grateful to all the volunteers and families who worked hard to make this evening possible,” said Nuune. “Events like this iftar bring people together and strengthen the spirit of community. Integration is very important for our community in the Netherlands. It helps us build mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation between different cultures while contributing positively to the society we live in.”
He also extended a warm welcome to representatives of the municipality who attended the event.
Among the officials present were Anja Roeffs, Deputy Mayor (Wethouder) of the Municipality of Zwolle, along with Hattie van Aalderen, Stan Vergeer, Luna Koops, Mohamed El Mellahi, and Miriam Nitte Ntumba, who joined the community to share the evening.
During her remarks, Roeffs emphasized the importance of social inclusion and civic participation, noting that it is essential for everyone living in the city to feel part of the community and to actively participate in society. She also encouraged residents to exercise their democratic rights and take part in elections.
During the discussion session, community members raised several important questions to the visiting leaders about key issues affecting residents in the Netherlands. Participants asked about the upcoming elections scheduled for March 16, the ongoing housing shortage that has left many people waiting for homes for long periods, and how authorities plan to improve care for elderly people. They also asked about future policies regarding immigrants and asylum seekers.
The officials, many of whom represent the joint political alliance GroenLinks–PvdA, responded to the concerns and said they are aware of these challenges and will continue working to address them, emphasizing their commitment to improving housing access, social services, and support for diverse communities.
The iftar provided an important moment of connection, dialogue, and solidarity among people from diverse cultural backgrounds, reflecting the spirit of Ramadan and community unity.
At the end of the evening, certificates of appreciation were presented to volunteers in recognition of their dedication and contributions in making the event successful. The organizers expressed gratitude to everyone who supported and participated in the event, helping to make the community iftar a meaningful and memorable gathering.
